Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA)

This course teaches adults how to assist for adults to learn how to assist young people experiencing mental health problems and in a mental health crisis.

Mental health problems frequently first arise in adolescence and young adulthood. Young people have poorer knowledge about mental health and how to get professional help. They are particularly likely to initially need support from adults to get appropriate help.

Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or who is in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves.

One in five Australians experience a mental health disorder every year and while people often know a lot about common physical health problems, there is widespread ignorance of mental health problems. This ignorance adds to stigmatising attitudes and prevents people from seeking help early and seeking the best sort of help. It also prevents people providing appropriate support to colleagues and family members, simply because they do not know how.

Mental health problems covered:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Psychosis
  • Substance misuse

Crisis situations covered:

  • Suicidal behaviour/thoughts
  • Non-suicidal self injury
  • Eating disorders
  • Panic attack/acute stress reaction
  • Acute psychotic behaviour
  • Substance overdose

Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of these mental health problems, where and how to get help and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective.  They will be able to respond to a developing or ongoing mental health problem, with the aim to decrease long term harm and disruption to the young person’s wellbeing.

This course is for adults who spend time with young people such as parents, teachers, sports coaches, youth group leaders, chaplains, school nurses, social workers, counsellors etc.
