Mental Health First Aid for Supervisors and Managers

This course has been customised to enable supervisors and managers to recognise and appropriately respond to staff members who are experiencing mental health problems or are in a mental health crisis.

Participants will learn the symptoms and functional impact of common mental health problems and reasonable accommodations that can be made in the workplace to meet both the employee and employer's needs.

Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves.

One in five Australian adults experience a mental health disorder every year and while people often know a lot about common physical health problems, there is widespread ignorance of mental health problems. This ignorance adds to stigmatising attitudes and prevents people from seeking help early and seeking the best sort of help. It also prevents people from providing appropriate support to colleagues and family members, simply because they do not know how.

Mental health problems covered:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Psychosis
  • Substance misuse

Crisis situations covered:

  • Suicidal behaviour/thoughts
  • Panic attack/acute stress reaction
  • Acute psychotic behaviour
  • Substance overdose

Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of these mental health problems, where and how to get help and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective.

This course is for those who have staff members or colleagues living with mental illness and who want to know how best to help, including Human resource personnel.
