Mental Health First Aid
This course teaches adults how to assist other adults experiencing mental health problems or who are in a mental health crisis.
Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves.
One in five Australian adults experience a mental health disorder every year and while people often know a lot about common physical health problems, there is widespread ignorance of mental health problems. This ignorance adds to stigmatising attitudes and prevents people from seeking help early and seeking the best sort of help. It also prevents people from providing appropriate support to colleagues and family members, simply because they do not know how.
Mental health problems covered:
- Depression
- Anxiety disorders
- Psychosis
- Substance misuse
Crisis situations covered:
- Suicidal behaviour/thoughts
- Panic attack/acute stress reaction
- Acute psychotic behaviour
- Substance overdose
Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of these mental health problems, where and how to get help and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective.
This course is for those who have family members, clients, colleagues or friends living with mental illness and who want to know how best to help them.

I thoroughly enjoyed the training. It was a good mix of information, 2-way questions and experiential activity. I was in awe of Tasha's ability to keep the group interested (and on time!), her extensive knowledge of the subject and her familiarity with latest research. I also appreciated the anecdotal and personal stories which aptly translated didactic learning into the often messy and contradictory realities of lived experience. Having the booklet and resources to keep as a practical resource is very useful. Thank you.
Ms Tevake, Social Worker
I attended the Mental Health First Aid program conducted by Tasha Broomhall in Aug 2010. Even though I have worked with people in trauma and with people with depression and anxiety for quite some time now, I thoroughly enjoyed the training. I learnt some new tools for working with my clients and consolidated my learning in other areas. In particular I learnt:
- to work with people from where they are at (regardless of whether they have a formal diagnosis or not)
- to appreciate the 'REAL' issues people are contending with when they suffer with depression or anxiety (from DVD)
- how to work with clients with depression and anxiety
- how prevelant these mental health issues are (stats)
I feel I have added to my tool box considerably by attending the seminar. The booklet (and website and agencies identified in it) and DVD will be a great practical resource.
Ms Hall, Victim Support Service
What a positive, informative course. Tasha's attitude & dry sense of humour helped with keeping everyone's attention. I would recommend this course to anyone who needs to understand this area.
