Mental Health and the Workplace: Are They Compatible?
A Legal Guide for Managers
1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness every year. This will effect presenteeism, absenteeism, staff turnover, workers compensation, morale and legal issues, and ultimately, your bottom line.
There are rights and obligations imposed by law on employers with respect to providing and maintaining a working environment in which its employees are not exposed to hazards to the extent that their employees are not suffering from a mental health condition. There are however, competing laws dealing with privacy, anti-discrimination and workers compensation and salary continence insurance. The intersection of these laws is a minefield for employers and the correct (or shall we say, 'best') answer will depend on the facts of individual cases.
In this session you will hear from two experienced lawyers about the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees when it comes to the ever prevalent issue of mental health in the workplace, and be provided with strategies to help you navigate the minefield of competing laws.

Mental Health First Aid
Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves.
People often know a lot about common physical health problems, yet there is widespread ignorance of mental health problems. This ignorance adds to stigmatising attitudes and prevents people from seeking help early and seeking the best sort of help. It also prevents people from providing appropriate support to colleagues and family members, simply because they do not know how.
This course is being used by organisations and government departments to equip staff with the knowledge and skills to not only respond to issues in their clients but also in themselves and their colleagues.
Accredited for CPD points by:
- Pharmaceutical Society of Australia
