Parenting Strategies: Preventing Adolescent Alcohol Misuse

Researchers from the OYH Mental Health Literacy Team and Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre have developed a new online resource to help parents protect their adolescents from developing alcohol-related problems.

They aim to discover if web based intervention programs providing parents with tailored information on parenting strategies is effective in improving parents' knowledge about adolescents and alcohol, confidence about parenting, and parenting behaviours; and hence preventing or reducing alcohol misuse in their adolescent child.

Participants will be asked to take an online survey about your current parenting practices regarding alcohol and your adolescent. you will receive automated feedback tailored to your answers, which include strategies that parents can use to help you handle the issue of alcohol and your child more confidently. You are then invited to complete a web based parenting program which will offer more extensive guidance, consisting of up to 13 modules taking between 20 - 30 minutes each depending on the topic and the way you choose to engage with it. Regular personalised emails are sent to you to pace you through the program and check in with you about the goals you have set.

Finally, you are asked to complete a follow up survey 2 months after the initial survey is completed. The researchers are inviting parents of children aged between 12 - 17 from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the USA and the UK. Parents of those with children older or younger are also welcome.

Participants privacy is assured.
